Planetary gear motors
Planetary gear motors have a gearbox with a planetary design and are DC motors. Despite the fact that planetary gear motors have small dimensions, they have large gear ratios and provide good performance.
Design and principle of operation
In such gearboxes, the shafts (input and output) are arranged coaxially. The devices consist of several gears arranged around a central gear. Their location is similar to the planets orbiting the Sun. The wheel in the center is called the solar gear, and the surrounding wheels are called planetary gears.
The solar gear transmits its momentum to the surrounding gears located on a hinged holder connected to the output shaft. The output rotation speed is lower than that of the drive, and the torque is much higher. The more gears interlock with each other, the higher the torque. Usually, one planetary gear contains from three to four gears.
The purpose of planetary gear motors
The task of gearboxes is to transmit torques and change the rotation speed between the input and output. They are often used where it is necessary to increase torque, especially in the automotive industry. An example is their use in transfer cases of four-wheel drive vehicles.
Planetary gears are installed in the hubs of the driving wheels of trucks and buses, as well as construction and agricultural machinery, where they allow vehicles to switch to low speed. Their early use is still sometimes found in the form of bicycle hub wheels.
Planetary gears are characterized by high efficiency with high torque transmission even in very small construction spaces. They are suitable for both clockwise and counterclockwise operation, as well as for alternating, constant or intermittent operation.
What are the positive differences between planetary gear motors:
- good efficiency;
- compact design;
- high specific power.
Their disadvantages include:
- a complex structure;
- higher power dissipation than that of gear cylindrical wheels.
