The cycloid gear (planetary gear) differs from others in that 67% of the tooth area of the cycloid discs is in contact at any given time. This allows the cycloid transmission to withstand the highest impact loads, which can be up to 500% of the rated torque of the gearbox.

Any other type of transmission has an overlap coefficient ten times less, as a result of which manufacturers of general industrial drives focus on an overload capacity of no more than 200% of the rated torque.
