The principle of operation of a thermostatic steam trap is based on the temperature difference between steam and condensate.

The working element of the thermostatic condensate trap is a capsule with a seat located in the lower part, which performs the function of a locking mechanism. The capsule is fixed in the body of the condensate trap, and the disk is located directly above the seat, at the outlet of the condensate trap. In the cold state, there is a gap between the capsule disk and the seat, allowing condensate, air and other non-condensable gases to freely exit the condensate trap. When heated, the special composition in the capsule expands, acting on the disk, which, when expanded, descends onto the seat, preventing steam from escaping.

This type of condensate drains, in addition to condensate drainage, also allows you to remove air and gases from the system, that is, to be used as an air vent for steam systems. There are three modifications of thermostatic capsules that allow condensate to be discharged at a temperature of 5 ° C, 10 ° C or 30 ° C below the vaporization temperature.
