These are heat exchangers in which the heat exchange surface between two streams is formed from pipes. They are enclosed in a casing, and heat exchange is carried out through the surface of these pipes.

In heat exchangers of this type, one of the heat carriers moves through the pipes, the second in the space between the pipes.
