ABB DC Series DCS400 digital electric drives are the first full-fledged generation of DC electric drives on the global market. Before the coin-operated DCS400 digital electric drive entered the market, none of the manufacturers could offer complete functional solutions for controlling low- and medium-power DC electric machines. In terms of functionality and ease of commissioning, neither Siemens with Simoreg DC Master drives, nor Control Techniques with Mentor 2 drives, nor SSD Drives with DC590+ drives could compete with the DCS400.
When designing a new generation of drives, ABB first of all tried to pay attention to the creation of human-oriented equipment - when setting up, the user should not perform any additional calculations, converting the parameters of electric machines into binary code, should not assemble additional circuits to optimize operation.
Our acquaintance with the DCS400 electric drive occurred in the early 2000s, when our engineers took part in commissioning, these electric drives were equipped with CFS cutters, Cincinnati extruders, Maillefer, BHS paper machines, ski lifts.
For a decade, our engineers have been operating this generation of electric drive and are ready to give their assessment of its characteristics.
In our opinion, the DCS400 electric drive has the best guided auto-tuning among DC electric drives, which allows you to quickly adjust the equipment to the required operating modes and parameters of the electric motor, gives the user the opportunity to comprehensively protect the entire electric drive. The DCS400 electric drive provides:
- monitoring of breakage in the speed feedback circuit,
- protection of the electric motor from overheating using PTC sensors,
- quadratic load control;
- control of exceeding the set speed;
- protection against jamming of the motor shaft;
- monitoring of the armature and excitation circuit current.
At the moment, the DCS400 series drives are being discontinued, the "successor" is the new series of digital thyristor regulators DCS550.
In case of failure of previously installed DCS400 series drives, our engineers are ready to either repair them or supply new DCS550 drives with pre-parameterization, which will allow you to connect the new controller to its original location without additional intervention.

ABB DCS400 thyristor converters: technical characteristics, advantages, scope of application
Over the years, the ABB production company has managed to earn universal recognition and trust in the Russian market of electrical engineering and products designed to automate production activities. The main reserves of the company's production are located in the largest countries of Europe and in Russia, and therefore our compatriots will not have to order high-quality products from afar.
Technical specifications
Standard thyristor converter The ABB DCS400 is a modern device designed to ensure the smooth operation of electrical equipment, whose power does not exceed 522 kW.
The main technical features are:
- the presence of an engine speed controller in two directions (for acceleration and deceleration);
- the ability to set the torque;
- The current supply can be adjusted;
- the ability to automatically optimize the current supply in the anchor circuit and other working nodes;
- the presence of remote current control;
- The DC regulator automatically controls the operation of the system, preventing overloads;
- the device has a degree of protection IP00;
- There are 3 analog inputs and 2 outputs.
Features of the mechanism
The removable control panel, which normally displays all important information, helps to quickly identify and fix equipment malfunctions. With the help of the built-in exciter, it is possible to start the operation of the mechanism without connecting chokes, fuses and an additional transformer.
Before starting work thyristor converter It will automatically receive information about the device connected to it and coordinate important parameters. The instruction package will help the user to start using the device immediately after installation and solve any difficulties that arise during operation using the prompts of the interactive menu.
Product Advantages
Thyristor converter The ABB DCS400 is the most compact device in its class. It is easy to install, no special training course is required for operation. An interactive assistant built into the control panel will help to adjust the operation of the device. The presence of application macros will ensure stable, uninterrupted operation of all systems and devices in the working chain.
Scope of application
This DC converter is used to ensure the operation of extruders, mixers, cutters, drawing machines, presses and other similar electrical equipment.
