Advantages of using soft-start devices /ABB UPP of the PSS series
Ease of installation work – use of previously laid cable circuits to replace starters, contactors;
Operation mode "star – triangle" – cost savings when connecting inside the "triangle", the SCP is selected for a smaller standard size, replacement of contactors with the "star – triangle" circuit;
Electronic control and monitoring system – high reliability in severe operating conditions with frequent starts and stops, minimization of maintenance; Simple and visual equipment configuration – parameterization is carried out using three external potentiometers (acceleration time, braking time, initial/final voltage level);
Built-in current limiting function – an additional external transformer allows you to limit the current during heavy start-up of the electric machine.
An example of the implementation of connecting a PSS soft starter device into a line and inside a "triangle"
When starting an electric motor with a rated operating current of 100A from a SCP connected to the line, the nominal value of the device must be equal to the nominal operating current of the electric motor. In our case, it is equal to 100A and we choose the SCP PSS105/181-500. When starting the same electric motor from the SCP, switched on inside the triangle, the current flowing through the softstarter decreases by 42% and is already 58%. In this case, we can install the PSS60/105-500 device, which is one size smaller than the device included in the line.
The dependence of the soft-start device selection on the operating mode
Normal start-up, Class 10: screw/centrifugal pump, compressor, elevator, conveyor belt (short length), escalator, elevator, lifting device. The nominal value of the device corresponds to the nominal current of the electric motor.
Heavy start, Class 30: mill, crusher, mixer, mixer, chopper, long conveyor systems. The nominal value of the device must be selected by a standard size larger than the nominal current of the electric motor.
Note: for a number of more than 10 starts/hour, the nominal value of the device must be selected for a nominal value greater than the nominal current of the electric motor.
Examples of solving mechanical and electrical problems when using SCP
– electrical problems associated with voltage drawdowns and current surges that occur during direct start of the electric motor. Local overloads, power outages, electromagnetic interference, failures in the operation of technological equipment.
– accelerated wear of mechanical parts in all elements of the drive mechanism (electric motors, gearboxes, gears, bearing supports, conveyor belts ...) and as a result frequent downtime for repair and maintenance work;
– operational problems associated with an abrupt start of the electric drive, as an example, when starting conveyors, damage to finished products is possible;
– hydraulic shocks, pressure surges in pipelines when starting and stopping pumping equipment.
