The soft starter /softstarter of the PST and PSTB series is ABB's most advanced and functional equipment designed to control the smooth start and braking of an asynchronous electric drive. The range of operating currents of the PST series for inclusion in the line is from 30 to 1050A, for inclusion inside the "triangle" - up to 1810A. The presence of built-in digital inputs and outputs allows the user to integrate the device into any automated control system.
A distinctive feature of the SCP PST(B) is a modern control and protection system that ensures reliable operation of the electric drive, protection of the electric motor and power electronics of the device, allows you to monitor the current state and inform the control system about the possibility of emergency modes. By default, all PST(B) softstarters are equipped with an interface for connection to the FieldBusPlug process bus, the devices support digital data exchange protocols CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus DP, Modbus RTU.
The PSTB versions for current ratings from 370 to 1050A are equipped with an integrated bypass/shunt contactor by default.

Advantages of using soft-start /UPP ABB PST(B) series devices
Torque control function - the torque control algorithm reduces equipment wear, prevents the possibility of water shocks, pressure surges, accidents in water supply systems, and significantly reduces maintenance costs;
Built-in bypass contactor – improving energy efficiency by reducing heat losses, minimizing the overall dimensions of devices, increasing reliability regardless of operating conditions;
High degree of protection of the electric drive – soft-start protection functions ensure trouble-free operation of the electric drive in the most difficult conditions, protect power electronics from overheating, inform about the current state and the possibility of emergency situations;
Programmable analog output – constant monitoring and display of information about current operating parameters, the ability to connect measuring instruments (ammeters, voltmeters), the transmission of an analog signal for processing into an automated process control system;
FieldBus Industrial Bus – full control of the automated control system over the status of the electric drive system, data exchange is carried out via digital protocols CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus DP, Modbus RTU;
Text display of information with Russian language support – visibility and convenience of setting up electrical equipment, the choice of the type of drive mechanism (pump, fan, conveyor, compressor, mill) automatically activates the necessary functions and control modes.
An example of the implementation of the connection in line and inside the "triangle" of the soft starter PST(B)
When starting an electric motor with a rated operating current of 100A from a SCP connected to the line, the nominal value of the device must be equal to the nominal operating current of the electric motor. In our case, it is equal to 100A and we choose SCP PST105-600-70. When starting the same electric motor from the SCP, switched on inside the triangle, the current flowing through the softstarter decreases by 42% and is already 58%. In this case, we can install the PST60-600-70 device, which is one size smaller than the device included in the line.
The dependence of the soft-start device selection on the operating mode
Normal start-up, Class 10: screw/centrifugal pumps, compressors, elevators, conveyor belts (short length), escalators, lifting devices. The nominal value of the device corresponds to the nominal current of the electric motor.
Heavy start, Class 30: mills, crushers, mixers, mixers, grinders, long conveyor systems. The nominal value of the device must be selected by a standard size larger than the nominal current of the electric motor.
Note: for a number of more than 10 starts/hour, the nominal value of the device must be selected for a nominal value greater than the nominal current of the electric motor.
